Hopkins Energy successfully delivered the full electrical installation works for ABB Automation’s new ship‑to‑shore charging system at Portsmouth International Port — a landmark project supporting the UK’s transition toward cleaner, low‑carbon maritime operations. This innovative infrastructure enables vessels to connect directly to the local electricity grid while docked, eliminating the need for onboard diesel generators. By providing reliable shore power (also known as cold ironing), the port can significantly cut emissions, improve local air quality, and support wider Net Zero ambitions. Delivered as part of the Sea Change initiative, the project showcases a strong multi‑partner collaboration between Portsmouth International Port, ABB Automation, Balfour Beatty plc, ShoreLink, and Hopkins Ltd. Together, the team has helped establish one of the UK’s leading examples of sustainable port technology. Our Energy & Special Projects division played a key role in bringing the system online, undertaking: Electrical containment installation High‑voltage cabling and control cabling All equipment and e‑house terminations Integration support for ABB’s full shore connection solution, including drives, transformers, switchgear, and associated infrastructure This completed installation now allows ferries and cruise vessels to plug into clean, grid‑supplied power while berthed — a major step forward in reducing emissions and supporting greener port operations.
